ROXY'S STORY: A dog saved by many!

On December 22 Roxy had escaped her home and was hit by a car near Baltimore MD. She ended up with two fractures in the pelvis, a fractured vertebrae at top of tail, and lots of bruising. Her owners could not pay for the surgery and were going to have her put down to keep her from suffering. The emergency animal hospital called Paulette Jones who sent an urgent message for help over the Sibernet. Paulette has transported Roxy to the DVSHR so that she can get the care she needed.

The DVSHR has taken Roxy to get her surgery. The total vet bills have been about $1950. Through donations and partial bill payments by the family, we have collected about $1800. Thanks so much for your support. Below are a photos to show her progress. DVSHR is a non-profit 501(c)3 If you want to donate to help other dogs in need, your contributions are tax deductible.

Roxy's First Friend

Roxy made her first friend at the Falls Road Animal Hospital. Valerie knew she was a special dog and arranged to get Roxy to rescue after the family could not afford the surgery. Here Valerie and Roxy say goodbye as Roxy head from Baltimore to New Jersey.

Roxy's Second Friend

Paulette is Roxy's Angel. She arranged to transport Roxy from Maryland to her foster home in New Jersey. The transfer was made along I-295 at a rest area.

Paulette has been instumental in helping to raise funds for Roxy's care. As she began to feel better after the surgery, Roxy gave Paulette a Woo Woooo over the phone to say Thanks

X-Ray after Repairs

Roxy had her surgery on December 27th. Dr Coudrai had to pull her bones back together and screw them in place. Dr. Courdrai had helped us with Lucky in the past.

Roxy also has a fracture at the top of her tail and she may never get to use it again. We are hoping that we can avoid amputating it but that will depend on Roxy and if she chews at it.

New Hair Cut for Siberians

Because her fractures were on both sides of the pelvis, Roxy needed to have incisions on each side to repair it. It is difficult for her to get comfortable but the pain meds help.

Roxy will recover at the home of Laura Briggs. She was picked up from the surgery on 12/28 and currenty has an upset bowel - most likely from all the stress. She did drink some water and has picked at food but has yet to eat.

Roxy rests after Surgery

Roxy will need lots of crate rest for the next four weeks and possibly longer. There is some concern that a second surgery will be needed due to the nature of the injury. We are hoping that she will mend herself and pray that all works in her favor.

Roxy whimpers a lot. She wants to get out and play and is upset when she can't. Ninkasi and Trappist keep her company as best they can.

Its cold and I am half naked!

12/29: Going out is a bit of an effort for Roxy - especially after the big snow storm. We cleared most of the snow so that roxy had a smooth surface to walk on. She does not like to mess her crate so these trips are a must.

Due to her upset bowel, we had to stop the pain meds until we could get her to eat. It took some effort to find a way to get Roxy to eat. The boiled meat and rice was not appealing to her. It was important that she have something to help bind her. The solution was baby rice cereal. I boiled burger, drained the fat, added water and coated the meat with rice cereal. She ate it right up! She is also getting a dose of probiotics to help her tummy while taking the antibiotics. We feed her four small meals a day now and so far she is much more stable.

If I am cute enough, he will pet me!

12/30: Roxy got some time out of the crate. We limit her movement but insist that she walk a bit to keep from getting stiff. She likes to sit and be pet. She really wants to try to climb up on the sofa but seems to know that was not possible in her current condition. We do not want to push her or set her up to cause further injury.

She is very careful when she sits and now she is sitting with both legs under her - not just on one side as she did at first.

Pet me more!

1/10: Roxy had her stitches taken out. We put a butterfly bandaid over on part of the incision that she would not stop licking. She has since left it alone.

Roxy is walking much better these days. She can now take a couple steps down and up to get outside without needing to be carried out. She is essentially off the pain medicine but when she acts stiff, we give her another dose. This is about every other day now. She is eating normal meals as well.

Look at me walking!

1/12 Roxy likes to be out of the crate so much these days that she howls to get out and visit. She likes to follow you around the house and prefers to be in the same room or at least be able to see you.

Her desire to get on the sofa led her to climb up when our backs were turned. We will watch that in the future since the doctor has ordered no climbing!

Dances With Dogs

1/28/01 Roxy and Laura dance together as part of the physical therapy. Dr Coudrai felt that Roxy needed to further develop her muscles to prevent atrophy. She favors one leg still but that was expected by the vet given the type of fracture.

Other therapy sessions include pulling a small sled, and walking up inclines or stairs.

These sessions are really helping as Roxy is getting more movement with each passing day. She now can scratch her ears with her hind legs, climbs readily up and down steps, puts her paws on the bed, and trys to crawl in your lap on the sofa (She is persistent with this and often ends up curled up on your lap for a nap).

I am too darn cute!

1/29 Roxy has declared the futon as her favorite resting place. She shows no hesitation in making herself comfortable. She did share the seat with some of our friends who came to watch the SuperBowl game although she did expect some attention in return. This girl is becoming quite a pistol these days. A friend entered Roxy in the game Pool and she won 10$ towards treats and toys (Thanks Karen!).
This is fun!

On Feb. 6 Roxy participated in a demonstration at the Women's Humane Society for the Pet Pals club. She was a great example as to how Siberian Huskies require extra care to prevent escapes and subsequent injuries. She also showed her ability to learn new things rapidly as one of the kids taught her to walk through the tunnel after they saw Ninkasi and Laura demonstrate agility.
Roxy Gets a Hug from the Doc

On 2/16 Roxy attended the Winslow Animal Hospital Open house. There she provided a great example of the work of Dr Coudrai. She met many other dogs which she greated with a paw slap or howl inviting them to play with her. Information on the Winslow Animal Hospital can be found at http://myvetonline.com/winslowanimalhospital
Roxy and Amy B

Roxy aired on WXTU Wednesday May 9 as the Pet of the Week.( http://www.wxtu.com ) Amy B took a moment to give Roxy a hug. Roxy made friends with the Radio staff and her story touched the heart of many listeners.

Shortly after the broadcast, calls starting coming in. It was difficult to choose one family for this girl - they were all so good.
